Varicose veins are usually understood to be a cosmetic defect rather than a serious medical condition. Such thinking is a big mistake because this condition, that could be innocent in the beginning, can lead to serious consequences if not treated in the right time. Conditions involving vessel malfunction can contain several terms describing different medical conditions. Benign and relatively mild are:

Telangiectasia (spider veins) - These are dilated capillary vessels which are not wider than 2 mm located just below the surface of the skin in the legs or face. Spider veins are blue, red or purplish in color with a web-like or linear appearance. Although they do not require medical treatment, please direct the doctor's attention to their presence.

More painful and appearing as often are varicose veins - Unnaturally swollen or stretched veins that protrude from the surface of skin in a rope-like manner. They are caused by malfunctioning blood valves and weak walls of blood vessels.

People with varicose veins often disregard the danger created by them. Varicose veins can lead to secondary conditions such as hemorrhages from varicose veins, ulcerations and inflammations of the skin which in reality, should not be taken lightly.

What causes varicose veins?

The exact reason is not yet known; however, it is proven that varicose veins are an inherited disease. This means that a patient is born with inclinations to that disease. In other words, if any of the parents of a patient had varicose veins, there is a high probability that this patient will be suffering from them too.

More women suffer from this condition than men. Hormonal factors such as puberty, pregnancy, menopause, taking hormonal contraceptive medications, estrogen or progesterone can have an influence on the development of varicose veins.

Other factors can also speed up the growth of varicose veins or widened vessels. These factors are: obesity, sudden changes of weight, obstructions, a sitting (not active) way of life, long periods of standing, posture defects, aging and leg injuries.
